Howard County Historical Society Concert: Banneker Benefit Concert


Featuring performers who have played at the Benjamin Banneker Historical Park and Museum (BBHPM) Colonial Market Fair, this concert combines great talent in traditional and African-American roots music.  Hear tunes that Banneker may have played on fiddle and flute as he took a break from writing his Almanacs in the 1790s.

Washington Revels Jubilee Voices will present powerful songs from across the African American experience.  African drumming influences in the Americas will be discussed and demonstrated by David Fakunle.   Banjo scholar, folklorist, and performer Greg Adams will discuss the African roots and playing style influences demonstrated on his gourd-style banjo.  Brian Farrow will play fiddle and bass and discuss African-American influenced traditional music  Steve Hickman and Marty Taylor will discuss and play dance music from the 18th century, and Steve Hickman will demonstrate his art of hambone.  Singers from the Capriccio Catch Club will offer some period vocal selections.

Light hors d'oeuvres will be generously provided by the Elkridge Furnace Inn.  Cash or credit bar will serve a selection of wine and beer and sodas. 

Sales and silent auction item bids will support the Benjamin Banneker Foundation sponsoring the Colonial Market Fair in June.
