On most Wednesday evenings Sotto Sopra Restaurant likes to feature local jazz musicians. Join us for dinner Wednesday, September 18th, kick back and listen to the very talented Simon Brother, Todd and Shawn.
A graduate of the East Carolina and Towson University jazz programs, Shawn Simon is a sought-after bassist on the East Coast traditional jazz and popular music circuit. Currently on the faculty at Loyola University, he has had the privilege to perform with a variety of jazz artists, including Terrell Stafford, Tim Warfield, Warren Wolf, William Goffigan, and Nicholas Payton.
Todd Simon is a highly sought-after musician, composer, and arranger in the Washington, D.C./Baltimore area who has served 4.5 years for the United States Naval Academy Band. He is a Peabody Conservatory of Music graduate. Todd quickly rose through the ranks of the DMV jazz scene as a rare talent capable of playing piano, the Hammond B3 organ, and several saxophones.
Todd’s 2013 CD Simon Says earned him a 2014 Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composer Award and a 2015 Maryland State Arts Council Individual Artist Award for composition; in 2018 he again won MSAC’s top prize, this time in the performance category. In 2015, Todd and his brother, bassist Shawn Simon, debuted their 3-part “Simon Brothers Holiday Special” series which showcases 25 area musicians. Todd’s growing discography includes Ben Patterson’s Vital Frequencies featuring Chris Potter, Darden Purcell’s Where the Blue Begins, Joshua Bayer’s Six by Five, Leo Maxey’s Think About Such Things and Ultrafaux’s Impromptu. Todd is also heard on Donvonte McCoy’s Third Floor and Lionel Lyles’ At the Precipice.
Todd remains an active composer, arranger, and performer well-versed in many genres. Recent highlights include performances at the Sax n Art Jazz Club in Vietnam, local jazz festivals, Blues Alley, the Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage, WPFW’s Live at Five, Delmarva Live, and multiple embassies.
