Waiting: The Van Duren Story free film screening

Not long after rock ‘n’ roll cult heroes Big Star broke up, two of the band members teamed up with Memphis musician Van Duren to form a new band.

They shared a manager with the Rolling Stones, and could have been the next Paul McCartney, but faded into obscurity instead.

On Wednesday March 20, the WTMD Film Series, in partnership with Towson University's Department of Electronic Media and Film, sets out to discover why Van Duren isn’t a household name with a free screening of the new documentary “Waiting: The Van Duren Story.”

The film follows two friends from Australia (a band manager & musician), who chance upon the mysterious musician’s lost album. They fall hopelessly in love with the music begin a journey to discover what became of Van Duren.

Self-taught filmmakers, their journey takes them across the world and sees them cross paths with rock stars, Scientologists, con men and a host of talented musicians some who made it ... and others that didn't.

Van Duren’s lost career is a parable of the trials and tribulations of the music industry -- an industry that leaves countless broken dreamers behind in its wake. "Waiting: The Van Duren Story" is a love letter to the artist that could have helped to define a generation.

Doors open at 7:30 p.m. and the movie starts at 8 p.m. at 1 Olympic Place in Towson. The movie is free and so is the popcorn.
